Howell Territorial Park + Matt’s Munchies Snack Date | PDX With Kids

2015_05_27_Howell Territorial Park-signHere I am once again catching up on posts from adventures we have taken over the past few months. This time it was a trip to Howell Territorial Park on Sauvie Island.

2015_05_27_Howell Territorial Park-house

This was one of those adventures that I honestly had no idea what we were getting ourselves into. All I knew was that there was an old house, an apple orchard and some trails to walk on. 2015_05_27_howell territorial park-group Things started off pretty well until we started to look for a trail to walk. The trail we found was covered in hay and for out littles it wasn’t the easiest to walk on. Edith had on sandals and after awhile we realized that maybe this nature walk just wasn’t the right fit for us. We never real found a good trail and in the end the overgrown grass was too much for everyone. So we decided that heading back to the picnic tables for a snack and running around was a better idea.2015_05_27_Howell Territorial Park-edith

For this snack date we had Matt’s Munchies fruit snacks. These are basically fruit leathers but in little squares which make them easier and more fun to eat. Now this wasn’t my first time enjoying Matt’s Munchies but it had been years so I was excited to try them again.

I tell you they were even better than I had remembered. We all were pretty hungry so we ended up trying every flavor. While we really enjoyed most all of them the ones that stood out were the Island Mango (coconut and mango), Banana Coconut and Banana were the hands down favorites. The only two flavors that weren’t popular with the adults or littles were the Mango Acai and the Mango Ginger, however if you are a big fan of ginger or are looking for a tummy tamer the mango ginger would be perfect for you. Overall Matt’s Munchies was a snack date winner!

Snack Date | Garden Babies at Luscher Farm

LuscherFarmsSnackDate4252

A few weeks back our little snack date group headed to Luscher Farms for their Garden Babies program that happens every Monday morning from April through October. The program starts with a few stories and then the kids get to head over to feed the chickens. I wasn’t sure what Edith would think about feeding the chickens and she was a little apprehensive at first but that quickly turned into excitement. I actually had a tough time convincing her to move on to the next activity.

Next we headed over the garden area so the kids good check out the worms and do a little digging in the garden. They spent a good 20-30 minutes running around the garden, playing and digging in the dirt and examining the plants. LuscherFarmsSnackDate4279 LuscherFarmsSnackDate4284

After the program finished we washed hands and found a picnic table to have our snack at. Today’s snack was Nature’s Bakery Fig Bars, a favorite among our group. We were able to have a sneak peek tasting of their new gluten free bars which come out this summer. Having always enjoyed the whole grain version of these fig bars I was curious to see what the gluten free version would taste like. Verdict? Hands down the gluten free bars were the favorite among our group.

While the whole grain bars are more reminiscent of the fig cookies I grew up loving I actually prefer the texture and soft bite of the gluten free fig bars. I think the fact they were softer and more moist made them more appealing to our tots as well. I can’t recommend these enough and can tell you at least in our house the gluten free fig bars (will be as soon as they hit stores) a staple in our snack jar.

Side note the flavor favorite among the group is the traditional fig flavor or the purple bar as it is known among our tots. LuscherFarmsSnackDate4290 LuscherFarmsSnackDate4294 LuscherFarmsSnackDate4297

Even the babes are loving the fig bars! LuscherFarmsSnackDate4289

We also brought out some Mamma Chia squeeze packets because we enjoy having a variety of options and these are a favorite of ours.

What are your favorite activities to do with your kids? We had such a great time attending this program. I am hoping to take Edith and Alder a few more times this summer. I imagine the program will be even better as the gardens grow!

What are you favorite on the go snacks?

Disclaimer: Nature’s Bakery provided us with a bunch of bars for our snack dates. We were not required to write a positive review. We received no monetary compensation for this post. We just love these bars and wanted to share with you.

Picnics In Portland | NadaMoo Ice Cream Social

MemorialDay-CathedralPark-20150875

This weeks snack date is a pretty special one that not only involves a park, a picnic and ice cream but it’s the first time in months that our three families were all able to get together. Most of our snack dates are just the moms and kids but this time the dads were able to join us as well. It’s always great when we can all get together. MemorialDay-CathedralPark-20150883

For our snack date this week we had NadaMoo a coconut milk based frozen dessert. This was the perfect ice cream substitute for our group as some of us don’t do dairy and others don’t do tree nuts so a coconut milk base worked for all of us. Plus really who doesn’t love ice cream or non-dairy frozen dessert? MemorialDay-CathedralPark-20150901

If you were directed here from Running With Tongs then you know that we received six flavors and that Neil and Edith got into the Cookies & Creme and I got into the Chocolate Almond Chip before we made it to the picnic. No worries though I think some of the best flavors were in these four cartons anyways.

These little munchkins seemed to enjoy themselves.MemorialDay-CathedralPark-20150919MemorialDay-CathedralPark-20150917

The adults seemed to as well. MemorialDay-CathedralPark-20150914

Before spending some time rolling in the grass we took an informal poll (of the adults) to see how the flavors ranked. The top flavor was definitely the Maple Pecan and the very close second was the Mint Chip. The babies seemed to like the chocolate …that may have been because it was the least favorite of the adults and therefore there was some left at the end for them to taste. The kids didn’t really express any favorites but I noticed Edith finished off her Maple Pecan and Mint Chip and left most of the chocolate and vanilla – so I’d say she enjoyed those ones.

I was actually surprised that I even liked the Mint Chip. There was something just super fresh about the mint and I loved that it didn’t just have flecks of chocolate in it but rather mini chocolate chips. Mom K said that she isn’t usually into mint chip either but she really enjoyed it as well.

Over all the ranking of the four would go:

  1. Maple Pecan
  2. Mint Chip
  3. Vanilla
  4. Chocolate

I’d add the chocolate almond to my top three but the cookies and creme would go straight to the bottom for me.

MemorialDay-CathedralPark-20150965MemorialDay-CathedralPark-20150975MemorialDay-CathedralPark-20150935After indulging in NadaMoo we took advantage of the sun, the grass and the time to just lay back and relax (as much as you can with babies and toddlers). We watched/played baseball, bubbles and even got to watch a train pass by our picnic site. We are looking forward to the summer and many more picnics together.

Side Note: Portland Area Friends NadaMoo is coming to New Seasons in June and Haggen this Summer!

Snack Date | 4 | Space Suits, Super Snacks & Slammers

Space Edith

It’s time for another snack date! This one is brought to you from the K & E Space Station. No but really aren’t these two just so cute with their “space helmets” and tutus on?

Space Kate Space Date

Alder wasn’t sure what to think of the whole situation.

Space Date My Super Snack

Once our little astronauts got hungry it was time for the weeks snack. This week they enjoyed some Organic Slammers flavor Awesome. Long before snack dates I had been buying these for E when I saw them on sale at Target. These snacks are perfect for kids, especially ones who are always on the go because they are filled with energizing fruit including acai. Acai is also a good source of antioxidants, fiber and heart-healthy fats.Space Date organic slammers Space Date edith slammer

E was all over the slammers and she slammed two back and left one for K to enjoy at a later date. Space Date apple - My Super Snack

K on the other hand was much more interested in the MySuperSnack granola bites and she helped herself to a few of each flavor of the bites. These little bites are non-GMO, contain no preservatives and are filled with protein and fiber. The granola bites reminded me less of a traditional granola bar or granola and more like a cereal bar which I actually think is better for the tots- easier to eat. K seemed to agree because with a little help she finished off all three bags.

While both girls decided to go a different direction with their snacking they both really seemed to enjoy their snacks. It’s funny how their tastes/interests in food change from week to week.

Snack Date | 3 | RAWR BARS & Mamma Chia

snackdate#3

We took snack date #3 outside and enjoyed a beautiful, sunny day in the Pacific Northwest. We enjoyed a hilly walk through Cooper Mountain Nature Park and then ended our adventure with a snack date at the playground located at the park. Our two biggest littles walked the entire time so they had worked up quite the appetite by the time we were through.

Snack Date - RAWR Bar Super Sweet Potato

We started our snack date with these all natural fruit and veggie snack bars from RAWR Bar. They contain 1/2 serving of fruit, 1/2 serving of veggies, NO sugar added, NO preservatives and they are Gluten Free and Certified Vegan. It’s hard to find a lot of bars these days that don’t have added sugars and aren’t just all fruit. I love that these sneak in a little bit of veggies because even the tot who eats everything has their days (weeks, months) when they get a little picky.

Snack Date - RAWR Bar beet

The girls each enjoyed one of the snack size packets before coming back to ask for more and more again. I guess you could say that they were over well. They didn’t seem to prefer a flavor over another so I would say that makes these a winner! I personally loved the very berry kale and Alder was a fan of the super sweet potato.

Snack Date - RAWR Bar

Once the girls had tired themselves of RAWR Bars they moved on to a staple in our house – the Chia Squeeze from Mamma Chia. I tell you I’m not surprised that Edith hasn’t turned into a chia seed by now. She has been loving these for two years now and if we are out of them at our house….well let’s just say there are a lot of toddler meltdowns.

Snack Date - mamma chia

So you know that these are already a winner or rather essential in our house so we were thrilled to share them with our friends. Now this was the true test what would K think? K isn’t always the biggest fan of squeeze packets but she sucked the Strawberry Banana flavor back and then asked for a second one. Unfortunately I only brought three and Alder was busy trying the Mango one before his big sister decided to finish it for him. snack date - mama chia kate snack date - mama chia

Verdict: Both snacks were hits! I personally loved them as well and Mamma Chia are one of my favorite pre/post workout snacks. I love how portable both of these snacks are to take with us to the park, the beach or to simply stock in the diaper bag for one of those inevitable hangry moments.

Snack Date | 2 | Snack Out Loud Foods

Snack Date With Snack Out Loud Power Puffs boom

You guys I have found the perfect snack for playdates. These Power Puffs from Snack Out Loud Foods are perfect for the littles and the adults. They are non-GMO and free of corn, peanuts and gluten and two flavors are dairy free. Unlike other puffs these ones are filled with protein and fiber which in my book is a huge selling point. Also ummm check out the packaging!! So fun!

Snack Date With Snack Out Loud Power Puffs BBQ

For our playdate last week we opened up the White Cheddar and the Sweet & Tangy BBQ. Unfortunately it was a cloudy day here in the Pacific Northwest so the photos are a bit on the dark side some and for reason I didn’t get a photo of the white cheddar one. Anyways back to the food. Since our family doesn’t do dairy we avoided the white cheddar ones but they were a favorite of K and her mom and L (the little boy below). Snack Date With Snack Out Loud Power Puffs

Edith and I were partial to the BBQ and L enjoyed the BBQ as well. Edith actual ate 3/5 of the bag of the BBQ ones and then asked for more. Too bad for her (and me) we didn’t have any more though.

Snack Date With Snack Out Loud Power Puffs-2

Snack Date- Snack Out Loud Power Puffs

I will admit the flavors of these puffs maybe be a little bit more mature than some kids are used to but lucky for us our snack date/play date kids love to eat and aren’t super picky. One other thing to note is that these may look like a puff but the texture/consistency isn’t quite what you might expect. The texture/consistency is really dense and are much more like a hybrid of a puff and that crunchy version of that crazy orange snack that won’t be named. That all being said they taste great. One of the other mom’s at the playdate said that she would definitely purchase the white cheddar flavor. Snack Date With Snack Out Loud Power Puffs snap

The only flavor I can say didn’t go over well with Edith was the Sea Salt & Vinegar. Neil and I however devoured them because they were so stinking good. The sea salt & vinegar are super flavorful and have that acidic vinegar burn you want from a salt and vinegar snack.

Verdict: The Power Puffs were a winner. The dairy eaters loved the White Cheddar, the BBQ were also a hit and the Sea Salt & Vinegar where popular with the adults.

Now I need to get my hands on some more of these because they are just so good.

Snack Date | 1 | Fruigees & Veggie-Go’s

Welcome to the start of one of our newest and delicious projects! We are going to have a weekly blog series featuring family friendly food products for Snack Dates. Basically each week our family and a few other families get together for a playdate but the thing is our growing tots and babies seem to want to spend the majority of their playdates snacking! That’s when we came up with the idea to do a snack date and each week we will try out a new snack or two and feature them on our blog.

This week we are featuring Fruigees* and Veggie-Go’s*!

Veggie-Go’s are also really tasty. These little fruit leathers are filled with 1/2 a serving of fruit and 1/2 a serving of vegetables and contain only fruits and veggies – no other additives. They are individually packaged which make them great to throw in a diaper bag and to take to playdates, on hikes, travel or simply just to have as a snack at home. As for the flavors they all taste great but we found that the TropiKale and Cinnamon Spiced Beet were a little tougher to eat for the tots. The overall favorite was the Mountain Berry Spinach which isn’t a surprise because who doesn’t love berries? Snack Date - 4.17.15 - veggie-gos shosh

The Fruigees went over well with the tots and one tot, K., who isn’t always as interested in packets slurped hers up and asked for more! That right there is a sign of a good product. Edith loves packets so it wasn’t hard to convince her to try one and S. loves snacks so she was thrilled to try it as well. I found these packets to be different than others that I have tried before. They are smoother and sweeter than other packets but still good and made of quality ingredients. These would be especially great for kids who are sensitive to textures. Overall these tasted good, are easy to take along and the tots enjoyed them.Snack Date - 4.17.15 - frugiees
